The Government is strongly committed to reducing Australia’s carbon pollution. The Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme (CPRS) is the main driver to achieve this important environmental goal.
When it commences on 1 July 2011, it will guarantee that Australia meets its expanded emissions reductions of as much as 25 per cent of 2000 levels by 2020.
Climate change is one of the key challenges facing Australia and the rest of the world, and it is a particular challenge for Australia’s agricultural sector. Modeling conducted for the Garnaut Review (2008) suggests that agricultural activity in Australia could contract by as much as 20 percent by 2100 if we don’t act now to reduce emissions.
The Australian Government is working on a number of fronts to meet the challenge of climate change for agriculture.
The $130 million Australia’s Farming Future initiative is designed to assist the agriculture sector adapt to climate change impacts and apply abatement measures. The recently finalised Forward Work Program to Determine Appropriate Carbon Mitigation Policies for Agriculture will develop and assess mitigation options for the industry, including the potential for coverage by the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme (CPRS). And as part of its international strategy, the Government is working to shape a global solution on climate change that takes account of the interests of Australian farmers.
