The NT Agricultural Association supports and fosters the development of primary industries in a
number of ways, namely:
A project based program of applied and collaborative research and development to
address high priority issues. Two current projects, 1) Control of Native Vegetation Regrowth and 2) Sustainable Irrigation and
Farming Systems are funded by the Federal Governments Caring for our Country program.
These projects will run for three years and a full time officer is devoted to each project.
You can find an
outline of these projects and the findings to date in our projects section.
Providing extension to individual producers and groups on a range of production,
technical and policy issues
The Association provides advice and technical information to industry on a wide range of issues
from crop agronomy, land management, irrigation to industry development and policy issues. Specific and confidential information and assistance can be provided to individual producers on request.
Broader industry issues are addressed via seminars, workshops and farm walks and
demonstration days.
The Association regularly invite outside experts and specialists to speak to
grower groups to enhance the level of knowledge and capacity in our farming community.
Field days and farm walks are used to disseminate information and a number of activities are
planned for 2010 including a farm walk at Douglas Daly to inspect and demonstrate regrowth
control methods and irrigation practice on a number of farms.
A field trip is also planned to the
Ord Irrigation Area or Central Australia and a major weed control workshop planned for later in
the year.
Providing technical information in publications, project reports and via the web
Providing extension and advice to our members is a major part of the Association’s activities and
each project has a strong extension focus where information is delivered via field-days, seminars,
demonstration sites and project reports to enhance the message and learning outcomes for participants. Project officers have extensive experience in formulating and delivering extension
and interacting with industry in the Top End.
The Association collaborates closely with key industry and government organisations such as the
NT Cattlemen’s Association, NT Horticultural Association and the Departments of Resources
(DoR) and Natural Resources, Environment, the Arts and Sports (NRETAS) to ensure efficient
delivery of information and project outcomes.
Members can arrange a farm visit to discuss specific agronomic or management issues, by
contacting the Association or an individual officer. Assistance and information can be tailored
specifically to a members unique circumstances and provided in confidence. Please contact one
of the project officers.
